The Pirate and the Firefly: A Lesson in Wisdom

Our friends at Shelton Interactive gave us The Pirate and the Firefly to review quite a while ago now.  This super sweet book is the second book released in the series written by Tara Reeves and Amanda Jenkins.  It is about a boy, a bug and a lesson in wisdom.

The first book, The Knight and the Firefly, is an adorable tale of a boy named Oliver overcoming his fears by learning how God protects him in Psalm 91:1-2.  In the second book, Oliver becomes friends with a bully of a fellow and gets pressured into doing things he knows is wrong while they play pirates.  Reeves and Jenkins do a great job in showing Oliver’s struggle with right and wrong.  They also describe the feelings that come when choices are made that go against what the child knows is right.  The pirate and the firefly, Oliver and Phineas, talk about his moral struggle as Phineas points him to God’s Word.  Oliver is able to then resolve the inner conflict he is experiencing and finds the courage do the right thing.

The verse that Phineas shares with Oliver is Psalm 1:1-

We have read it quite a few times in the time that we have had the book.  Just the other day, to my surprise, Big Bro made mention of the book.  He asked me if I remembered when the bully character was mean to Oliver and how that was not nice.  After quite some time, the story had stuck with him and I knew it had made an impression on his young mind.  Score!  It was super special to get a glimpse of something staying with him.

If you are struggling with your kids needing wisdom in choosing between right and wrong, this sweet little book packages up wisdom very nicely.  I would say Reeves and Jenkins hit the nail on the head with this book, just as they did with the 1st one in the series.  I am looking forward to the next one they write!

Big Bro, Little Bro and I would like to say thank you to Sara Pence of Shelton Interactive for the book to review!  We thoroughly enjoyed The Pirate and the Firefly and are looking forward to reading it to Baby Bro when he is a bit bigger!

I'd love to know your thoughts!
